Security Threats and Data Breaches in the Age of AI and Quantum Computing
Thales reports that AI and quantum threats have become major concerns for organizations dealing with data security. The 2025 Data Threat Report highlights the rapid development of AI, especially generative AI, as the top security issue related to its adoption. Concerns include a lack of integrity in AI systems and a deficit in trustworthiness.
Generative AI relies on high-quality, sensitive data for functions like model training and content generation. The increased use of generative AI poses new data security challenges for organizations, pushing them towards more mature operational deployments.
While security for generative AI is a growing priority, data breaches have shown a modest decline. The top threats remain malware, phishing, and external actors such as hacktivists and nation-state actors.
Organizations are also recognizing the risks posed by quantum computing. Concerns include future encryption compromise, key distribution vulnerabilities, and the "harvest now, decrypt later" threat. Many are evaluating post-quantum cryptography solutions but face challenges in transitioning due to legacy systems and complexity.
Addressing these security challenges requires a concerted effort to enhance data security practices. Organizations must stay ahead of emerging threats like AI-driven risks and quantum-related vulnerabilities to protect critical data effectively.
